donating to japan

So apparently there's a bit of an argument on whether to donate to Japan or not? Some people are saying that, since Japan is a rich first-world country, they are able to deal with the damage from the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown themselves and don't need the help of others in forms of donations.I think that's stupid. There's only two (ty captain obvious) possibilities here: 1) Japan doesn't actually need our help and can cope with it on their own, and 2) Japan needs our help. We don't know what Japan really needs/doesn't need since we don't live there and haven't experienced how it's like. Isn't it better to donate and "risk" it not going towards the disaster rather than not donating and thinking that Japan doesn't need our help when it really does? And besides, it's not like people will be losing a lot of money - let's face it, not many individuals would be willing to donate a huge amount of money. Many people would probably go for $10 or $20 at most anyway, and that honestly isn't a lot to lose.
I'm not trying to say that people who don't give to charities are cold-hearted and etc, but I think it's kind of wrong to assume that a city in shambles doesn't need help because their country has a good economy. 2 notes
